Spend the day learning the theory and practice of the low bar back squat and the deadlift with Starting Strength Coach Jarret Beck.
The camp will begin with a lecture focused on the basics of the squat and will include a discussion of the Starting Strength model of the lift, including the anatomy and forces at work in its execution. We will move into a practical session with plenty of time under the bar for all the lifters. Participants will have an opportunity to put into practice the concepts addressed in the lecture while receiving coaching through their warm up and work sets. Through the entire process, attendees will learn the hallmarks of a properly executed squat and how it should look and feel when it is performed correctly. Participants will go through the practical portion of the squat and then take a short break.
Following the break, the coach will discuss the Starting Strength model of the deadlift and the anatomy and mechanics involved in the pull. After the lecture, lifters will learn the 5-steps of a properly performed deadlift while being coached through their warm-ups and work sets. Similar to the squat session, attendees will learn how a correctly performed deadlift should look and feel when done according to the model.
After the deadlift practical session, we will return for a discussion of programming and how to identify and correct common technical problems. The camp will wrap up with a question and answer session. Whether you are just starting out with strength training, struggling with the basics of the lift, or looking to polish your technique and understanding of these movements, you will come away with valuable insights and experience to benefit your training. Attendance will be capped to allow for individualized instruction.

I attended the squat and deadlift camp at Starting Strength Columbus with my teenage son. We had been trying to follow the starting strength program at home on our own but got to the point where we knew our form needed work but we live too far away from the Starting Strength Columbus gym to come in for regular coaching. Jarret and his team of coaches and apprentices were awesome in explaining and breaking down the squat and deadlift in a way that will make it easy for us to continue training at home and start to self diagnose our form issues if they occur again. I learned so much more than I expected in the camp and left with tons of tips and motivation from all of the starting strength professionals. We will be back for future camps and for drop in or online coaching sessions. Thank you for hosting this camp!
Jarret and the assisting coaches did a great job teaching the squat and deadlift techniques. I have been lifting on/off for about 5 years and with their help my knees immediately felt better, which is an issue I have struggled with every time my squats have reached and exceeded 300 pounds. Having the SS coaches help you in person while doing the lifts makes a positive and significant difference. My numbers are up and pain and soreness are down. If you can attend a camp I highly recommend going, even if you are not following novice LP programming. A note on attending: write down questions in advance for the Q&A session; you will get out what you put in to the discussion.
