Spend the day learning the theory and practice of the low bar back squat and the deadlift with Starting Strength Coaches Emily and Diego Socolinsky.
The camp will begin with a lecture focused on the basics of the squat and will include a discussion of the Starting Strength model of the lift, including the anatomy and forces at work in its execution. We will move into a practical session with plenty of time under the bar for all the lifters. Participants will have an opportunity to put into practice the concepts addressed in the lecture while receiving coaching through their warm up and work sets. Through the entire process, attendees will learn the hallmarks of a properly executed squat and how it should look and feel when it is performed correctly. Participants will go through the practical portion of the squat and then take a short break.
Following the break, the coaches will discuss the Starting Strength model of the deadlift and the anatomy and mechanics involved in the pull. After the lecture, lifters will learn the 5-steps of a properly performed deadlift while being coached through their warm-ups and work sets. Similar to the squat session, attendees will learn how a correctly performed deadlift should look and feel when done according to the model.
After the deadlift practical session, we will return for a discussion of programming and how to identify and correct common technical problems. The camp will wrap up with a question and answer session. Whether you are just starting out with strength training, struggling with the basics of the lift, or looking to polish your technique and understanding of these movements, you will come away with valuable insights and experience to benefit your training. Attendance will be capped to allow for individualized instruction.

1 Reviews on “Squat & Deadlift – November 3, 2024 Baltimore, MD”
I attended a squat/deadlift at FiveX3 with my 16 year old daughter. Both coaches Emily and Diego are very knowledgeable and great to talk to. They were able to correct several issues we had with our lifts that we wouldn’t have noticed ourselves. For me personally, I had low back pain and Diego pointed out that I was over exaggerating the “butt back / bend over” cue on the squat. Once he adjusted my gaze and got me in the proper position for my body dimensions, my squat felt much smoother. Emily pointed out that I needed to focus more on resetting between deadlift reps. With each rep, I tended to set my hips higher and higher, getting out of the proper starting position.
Aside from the great coaches, the facility is great. Rather than endless machines usually found at commercial gyms, FiveX3 focuses on the Starting Strength method and consists mainly of racks and benches in order to perform the four main lifts. I saw a few machines and apparatuses that would help get even the most undertrained folks of any age started on the path to improving their strength.
I would highly recommend a session here for anyone, whether they are just beginning a strength journey, or have been training alone for years. There is always great feedback that coaches like Emily and Diego can provide to help make the best of your strength training.
